Eligibility

This program is open to clinical educators in any health profession who precept, supervise, and/or teach learners or other clinical staff at BCH on an ongoing basis and would benefit from more formal training in clinical teaching. 

Membership in the Teaching Certificate Program requires nomination by a candidate’s Division Chief, Department Chair, or Supervisor and a minimum of one year as a BCH Academy member. Individuals may not self-nominate.

Calls for nomination are announced July of every year. Once nominated, nominees must complete a full application for consideration.

Requirements

Core Seminars & Academy Sessions

  • Participation in 10 professional development sessions (all virtual) over 2 years focusing on the understanding and application of clinical teaching principles. Certificate members are strongly encouraged to attend live.
    • Six of the 10 sessions cover the Teaching Certificate Program's Core topics:
      • Understanding and applying adult learning principles
      • Leading interactive teaching sessions
      • Providing effective learner feedback
      • Designing and evaluating teaching sessions
      • Teaching critical thinking skills
      • Effectively supervising trainees and students.
    • Each Core Topic requires preparatory work and a post-reflection assignment.
  • Teaching Certificate Members are automatically accepted into the BCH Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship. Four of the 10 sessions are expected to be the BCH Academy Seminar Topics, offered monthly.

Individual Professional Development Activities

  • Observation of a master teacher in a clinical teaching setting and debrief of the observation.
  • Peer observation of your own teaching and personalized feedback.
  • Two coaching calls with a senior educator, who will discuss your teaching goals and progress.
  • One coaching call with program directors to discuss career goals in health professions education.

Time Commitment

This program may be attained over a two-year cycle and is estimated at 3 hours of time per month.
